Georgian Crowned Witches Heart Brooch/Antique Silver and Gold Paste Rare Brooch

Amazing Georgian Witches Heart with 27 foiled black dot paste stones, set in 925 sterling silver, with 9K gold clasp.

Witches hearts, or luckenbooths, were originally worn as a talisman to ward off the evil eye and protect a mother during childbirth and nursing. In the 17th and 18th century the heart started to be used more as a love token, symbolising the romantic connection between two people. It also began to take on the characteristic form we see in this particular piece, with the twist to the right at the bottom. The 18th century especially was very rich in symbolism, which is why we can find different types of witch's hearts with crowns (loyalty) or flames (marital love).
The 18th century also marks the invention and rise in popularity of paste stones. It is important to note that paste was a desired material in itself and not just for people who couldn't afford the "real deal". As such paste pieces from this century were done with remarkable craftsmanship and the same dedication that precious gems received.
